Choreography

Kat Richter's choreography explores the history of jazz music, the performance of gender, and the staging of so-called "vernacular" dance forms. Writing for Broad Street Review, dance critic Camille Bacon-Smith named Richter to her "short list of favorite choreographers" and Lew Whittington of The Dance Journal raved “Richter [...] continues to tell great stories in tap and step idioms, less reliant on tricks and traditions and more innovative tap artistry.”

Her work has been commissioned by Stockton University, Goucher College, the Bryn Mawr School for Girls, Magic Lantern Theatre Company and numerous schools and studios throughout the Greater Philadelphia region. She also regularly choreographs for her tap company, The Lady Hoofers, and created a number of new works for the company's original production of The Tapcracker, premiered at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre in 2017.

In addition to her work as a choreographer, Kat has 20 years of experience in dance education. She has worked as a teaching artist in a variety of settings, from inner city schools in both Philadelphia and Baltimore, to college dance programs in London and Oxford. She is available for choreographic commissions, workshops, lectures on dance history and anthropology, and college residency programs.
